The Lover's Eye is inspired by an 18^(th)-century love story which set a trend.
In 1784, the Prince of Wales fell madly in love with Mary Fitzherbert, but their union was not approved by the royal court. When the future King of England, George IV, proposed to her, she rejected him. She only accepted his second proposal, when instead of a ring, the Prince gave her a brooch with a miniature painting of his eye on it. Shortly after they married, Mary reciprocated with the same gift: a portrait of her own eye.
This romantic gesture inspired the English nobility of the late 18^(th) and early 19^(th) centuries. Couples exchanged discreet watercolours painted on ivory in the form of a brooch showing only one eye, thus concealing the identity of the lover.
Santavanitas has reinterpreted this tradition with a gold-plated silver brooch topped with a pearl, symbolising a tear.
It can also be worn as an earring and a hair accessory.
